Window insulation film kits can be a quick, cheap, and easy method to increase the winter season efficiency of your windows.
Make no mistake, this is a bandage for poorly performing windows, not a fix, but worthwhile all the same.
Window insulation film is a simple and inexpensive way to increase the performance of your ill-performing windows. According to one of the largest manufacturers of window insulation kits, Frost King, window film can increase the R-value of a window assembly by as much as 90%.
The kits decrease drafts and, at least to some extent, address weeping window issues.
I use a couple of these kits in my shop, which has two garage doors with windows. Although the doors themselves are well insulated, they were delivered with two single panes of plexiglass for windows. As soon as the weather turned cool and a couple of vehicles parked inside with wet tires, I had windows weeping all over.
Frost King window insulation kits and a little clear caulking around the window frames solved my weeping window problem and greatly improved the energy efficiency of my garage doors.
I should note that if you have severe weeping window problems in your home, you are likely experiencing an air-quality and ventilation problem more than a window problem! Window insulation film may help your weeping windows, but you will only be treating a symptom. You will still need to address your ventilation issues.
As I mentioned above, window film is a bandage that can cheaply address a symptom. Replacing poorly performing windows is the best approach, but may not always be possible.
These inexpensive products can make real difference and pay for themselves dozens of times over.
|Putting a window insulation kit onto a window is an easy process. Window cleaner, scissors, a hair dryer, and a little patience will give you a tight and well-sealed window with no creases or wrinkles.
An adhesive strip goes on the edges of the window sill and casing. The plastic is roughly trimmed to the needed size and pressed into the adhesive strips, getting the sheet as tight and flat as possible.
In my experience, the double-sided adhesive strips are forgiving and will remain sticky with several stick, adjust, re-stick cycles as you make adjustments.
Heating the sheeting with a hairdryer causes the plastic material to shrink, becoming a wrinkle-free and drum-tight layer.
The resulting film is surprisingly clear. Visual clarity, while not perfect, is as good as can be expected when looking through a sheet of plastic.
